GitHub's announcement centers on Copilot agents that integrate directly with Actions workflows. The key word is "agents"—not assistants, not suggestions, but autonomous actors that can be triggered by events in your repository.
Here's what that means concretely: you can now configure workflows where an AI agent responds to issues, reviews pull requests, suggests fixes, and even opens PRs—all without human involvement at the trigger point.
An issue gets filed? The agent can analyze it, check if it's a duplicate, attempt to reproduce it, and either close it with an explanation or escalate it with context. A PR gets opened? The agent can review it against your standards, check for security issues, and approve or request changes.
This isn't theoretical. It's shipping to GitHub Enterprise customers now, with broader availability following.
The Architecture Shift
What makes this different from previous AI integrations is the execution model. Previous tools like Copilot sat between the developer and the code—suggesting, autocompleting, but always with a human in the loop.
